You do not need to use the miniroot. In order for the server to automatically configure itself you must reboot your system after installation. Refer to the _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e for complete installation instructions. Important: If you are upgrading from any previous installation of Netscape web servers see the section below about "Upgrade Installation Information" for important information about how to upgrade your security key. 2.4 _S_p_e_c_i_f_i_c__t_o__t_h_i_s__r_e_l_e_a_s_e The Netscape FastTrack Server 3.03 comes with its own Administration Server. This is running on port 8182. You may start the Administration Server by running the following command as the root user: #### ccccdddd ////vvvvaaaarrrr////nnnneeeettttssssccccaaaappppeeee////ffffaaaassssttttttttrrrraaaacccckkkk #### ....////ssssttttaaaarrrrtttt----aaaaddddmmmmiiiinnnn 2.5 _C_o_n_f_i_g_u_r_a_t_i_o_n__F_i_l_e_s There are several configuration files in this product. The first is /_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_n_s_s__f_a_s_t_t_r_a_c_k which is controlled by the state of the _c_h_k_c_o_n_f_i_g command. The value is either on or off telling whether the FastTrack Server should be started automatically on system reboot or not started and thus started manually. The next file is /_e_t_c/_i_n_i_t._d/_n_s_s__f_a_s_t_t_r_a_c_k which starts and stops the FastTrack Server. It can be invoked manually or automatically when the system is rebooted. You shouldn't need to edit this file. The next file is the administration server's password file. This is located in /_v_a_r/_n_e_t_s_c_a_p_e/_f_a_s_t_t_r_a_c_k/_a_d_m_s_e_r_v/_a_d_m_p_w and currently ships with _a_d_m_i_n as the administration password. Notice the password is stored in an encrypted form. Once you begin administering your system you should configure a - 3 - different administration server password using the administration forms in your administration server. Most of the other configurable parameters can be changed via the Administration Server which is accessable on port 8182 at the following URL: hhhhttttttttpppp::::////////llllooooccccaaaallllhhhhoooosssstttt::::8888111188882222//// All configuration files for the Administration Server, in /var/netscape/fasttrack/admin-serv/config, and for the FastTrack Server, in /var/netscape/fasttrack/httpd- <hostname>/config, are marked as such in the installation image. This means that a new installation on top of an older one will not overwrite the configuration files unless they have not been modified by you. If a configuration file has been modified since its initial installation, the new configuration file will have a suffix of ._N appended to its name and you need to manually merge the changes. 2.6 _F_i_l_e_s__N_o_t__L_i_s_t_e_d__b_y__vvvv_eeee_rrrr_ssss_iiii_oooo_nnnn_ssss This version of the Netscape FastTrack Server creates files and directories not listed by _vvvv_eeee_rrrr_ssss_iiii_oooo_nnnn_ssss. They mimic the _i_n_s_t config files in their behavior. When the new version is installed, it checks if there is already an instance installed and will leave the old instance directory httpd- <hostname> as is. If you have changed the configurations of your servers through the Administration Server in the 'Server Settings' form, you do not have to make those same changes in the servers newly installed. To get the latest set of configuration files however, you must create a new server instance from the Administration Server form and manually migrate your changes. The following files are also installed if you had previously turned on access control for your server: ////vvvvaaaarrrr////nnnneeeettttssssccccaaaappppeeee////ffffaaaassssttttttttrrrraaaacccckkkk////hhhhttttttttppppaaaaccccllll////ggggeeeennnneeeerrrraaaatttteeeedddd....hhhhttttttttppppdddd----<<<<hhhhoooossssttttnnnnaaaammmmeeee>>>>....aaaaccccllll....NNNN and ////vvvvaaaarrrr////nnnneeeettttssssccccaaaappppeeee////ffffaaaassssttttttttrrrraaaacccckkkk////hhhhttttttttppppaaaaccccllll////ggggeeeennnnwwwwoooorrrrkkkk....hhhhttttttttppppdddd----<<<<hhhhoooossssttttnnnnaaaammmmeeee>>>>....aaaaccccllll....NNNN These files are the default access control files for the server. If you have turned on access control previously for a server of the same name, then you should not simply copy the '.N' files over your old ones. You will need to look at the respective files and edit according to your needs. - 4 - 2.7 _G_e_n_e_r_a_l__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n This version of the Netscape FastTrack Server comes pre- installed and pre-configured. The Netscape FastTrack Server configures itself for running on port 80 with a document root of /_v_a_r/_w_w_w/_h_t_d_o_c_s. Important: This version installs its files in /_v_a_r/_n_e_t_s_c_a_p_e/_f_a_s_t_t_r_a_c_k so if you are upgrading from a previous installation that installed the FastTrack Server in a different location see the section below about "Upgrade Installation Information". In the forms used to administer the Netscape server, there are two user accounts that are mentioned. One is a Unix user account and must appear in the /_e_t_c/_p_a_s_s_w_d file while the other is a Netscape Administration user and does not exist in the /etc/passwd file, but in the /_v_a_r/_n_e_t_s_c_a_p_e/_f_a_s_t_t_r_a_c_k/_a_d_m_i_n-_s_e_r_v/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_a_d_m_p_w file. The Unix user account is the one used to run the FastTrack Server process and has a default of "nobody". If you use the "nobody" user make sure that the value of the user id and group id is 60001 and not a negative number. Customization of the Netscape FastTrack Server images requires the use of the Netscape Navigator or Communicator as a graphical front end for the configuration process. If you are installing these images on a Origin 200 or other SGI server system you are required to have an X terminal or workstation with an X windows display capability accessible from the server. For more details on customizing and administering your Netscape FastTrack Server, see the FasttrackAdminGuide which is found in the Web Tools and Applications Icon Catalog pages. 2.8 _U_p_g_r_a_d_e__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n If you are installing the FastTrack Server as an upgrade to the Netscape Communications Server 1.12 or the Netscape FastTrack Server 2.x then you may need to reconfigure the newly installed server before shutting down your old server, if you modified any server configurations beyond the default settings. The Administration Server front page will have a migration utility for the Netscape FastTrack Server 2.x. - 5 - 2.9 _U_p_g_r_a_d_i_n_g__f_r_o_m__F_a_s_t_T_r_a_c_k__S_e_r_v_e_r__2_._x If you are upgrading from a standard Netscape FastTrack Server 2.x and you used the default server root of /_u_s_r/_n_s- _h_o_m_e then your new server will nnnnooootttt replace the old server binaries nor the configuration files. You can try to use the mmmmiiiiggggrrrraaaatttteeee sssseeeerrrrvvvveeeerrrr function from the newer Administration Server but we recommend you to migrate manually. 2.10 _U_p_g_r_a_d_i_n_g__f_r_o_m__N_e_t_s_c_a_p_e__C_o_m_m_u_n_i_c_a_t_i_o_n_s__S_e_r_v_e_r__1_._1_2 If you are upgrading from the Netscape Communications 1.12 Server and you used the default server root of /_u_s_r/_n_s-_h_o_m_e then you may still have to reconfigure the new server to restore any functionality beyond the default configuration. Your new server will replace the old server binaries but all your configuration files will remain intact. After making sure the new server behaves properly, you will have to remove the old files by hand. 2.11 _U_p_g_r_a_d_i_n_g__f_r_o_m__N_e_t_s_c_a_p_e__C_o_m_m_u_n_i_c_a_t_i_o_n_s__S_e_r_v_e_r__1_._0 If you are upgrading from any version of the Netscape Communications 1.0 Server you may still have to reconfigure the new server to restore full functionality. After making sure the new server behaves properly, you will have to remove the old files by hand, the server root for this server was /_v_a_r/_m_c-_h_t_t_p_d. 2.12 _U_p_g_r_a_d_e__P_r_o_c_e_d_u_r_e Prior to upgrading your Netscape FastTrack Server you should stop the currently running server. If you have a 1.0 server do the following: #### ////eeeettttcccc////iiiinnnniiiitttt....dddd////nnnneeeettttssssiiiitttteeee ssssttttoooopppp If you have a 1.12 server do the following: #### ////eeeettttcccc////iiiinnnniiiitttt....dddd////nnnnssss____hhhhttttttttppppdddd ssssttttoooopppp otherwise stop the server by doing this: #### ////eeeettttcccc////iiiinnnniiiitttt....dddd////nnnnssss____ffffaaaassssttttttttrrrraaaacccckkkk ssssttttoooopppp After completing the upgrade and reconfiguring the new server to match your old server's parameters, you should restart the server by doing the following: #### ////eeeettttcccc////iiiinnnniiiitttt....dddd////nnnnssssssss____ffffaaaassssttttttttrrrraaaacccckkkk ssssttttaaaarrrrtttt - 6 - At this point your server will be up and running and able to accept web connections. 2.13 _N_e_t_s_c_a_p_e _F_a_s_t_T_r_a_c_k _S_e_r_v_e_r _a_n_d _O_t_h_e_r _I_R_I_X _W_e_b-_b_a_s_e_d _A_p_p_l_i_c_a_t_i_o_n_s This section is relevant only when altering the Netscape FastTrack Server configurations from their default settings. The Netscape FastTrack Server comes pre-configured to work with the MindShare OutBox, WebDist, WebSetup InfoSearch, DynaWeb, Intranet Junction, and other future web-based products that SGI will ship. No special configuration is necessary, they share the same document root and cgi-bin directory. You should not change these locations if you want OutBox to work with your Netscape FastTrack server. At a minimum the following configuration should be maintained: +o Your document root must be /_v_a_r/_w_w_w/_h_t_d_o_c_s +o _c_g_i-_b_i_n must be mapped to /_v_a_r/_w_w_w/_c_g_i-_b_i_n and enabled +o Public html must be mapped to ppppuuuubbbblllliiiicccc____hhhhttttmmmmllll and enabled +o Server parsed HTML must be enabled and parse all .shtml files Future web-based products SGI ships will depend on a web server being able to access files within the document root and CGI directory specified above. By default /_v_a_r/_w_w_w/_h_t_d_o_c_s is writable by all users. If this is not what you want change the permissions appropriately. 2.14 _F_i_n_a_l__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n After you have installed and configured your new Netscape FastTrack Server and you have tested to make sure it is fully functional, you should configure your system so that it will automatically be restarted if your server ever needs to be rebooted. To allow the Netscape server to automatically restart on reboot do the following: #### cccchhhhkkkkccccoooonnnnffffiiiigggg nnnnssssssss____ffffaaaassssttttttttrrrraaaacccckkkk oooonnnn This Netscape FastTrack server includes an Administration Server that is not shared with other Netscape servers when more than one Netscape server is installed on the same machine. This Administration Server must be running in - 7 - order to administer your Netscape FastTrack server. You will have to start the Administration Server by hand in order to administer your server. To start the server by hand execute the following command: #### ////vvvvaaaarrrr////nnnneeeettttssssccccaaaappppeeee////ffffaaaassssttttttttrrrraaaacccckkkk////ssssttttaaaarrrrtttt----aaaaddddmmmmiiiinnnn 2.15 _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _o_f _a _N_e_t_s_c_a_p_e _F_a_s_t_T_r_a_c_k _S_e_r_v_e_r _o_n _a _m_a_c_h_i_n_e _r_u_n_n_i_n_g _O_u_t_B_o_x _w_e_b_s_e_r_v_e_r The OutBox webserver uses port 80, which is the default for the HTTP protocol. This prevents Netscape FastTrack Server from binding to this port during installation. To install a Netscape FastTrack Server on a machine running OutBox webserver, after installation do the following: #### cccchhhhkkkkccccoooonnnnffffiiiigggg nnnnssssssss____ffffaaaassssttttttttrrrraaaacccckkkk oooonnnn #### cccchhhhkkkkccccoooonnnnffffiiiigggg oooouuuuttttbbbbooooxxxx ooooffffffff Then you may customize your Netscape server as discussed in the previous section. After you reboot your machine the OutBox webserver will be automatically turned off and the Netscape Server will take control. 2.16 _A_u_t_o_-_c_o_n_f_i_g_u_r_a_t_i_o_n__o_f__F_a_s_t_T_r_a_c_k__S_e_r_v_e_r_s If any key system information has changed, the FastTrack Servers will be auto-configured each time the /_e_t_c/_i_n_i_t._d/_n_s_s__f_a_s_t_t_r_a_c_k _s_t_a_r_t script is run and _n_s_s__f_a_s_t_t_r_a_c_k is chkconfiged "on". This information is the host name, IP address, and domain. These changes are made to the configuration files in each server instance.
